How to Sew Fashion Clothes

As with any practical skill, sewing can be learned by anyone. For those who want to create their own fashion wardrobe, express creativity or save money from buying those expensive designer label clothes, sewing is a viable option. If you are brand new to sewing, read a book on sewing for beginners, such as "Sewing For Dummies" first.

  1. Leaf through one of the sewing pattern catalogs available at Walmart or your local sewing center and pick a pattern you like that is marked for beginners. It may be labeled as "Easy". You will also find patterns online. Companies like VOGUEpatterns, McCall's and Simplicity have been around for decades.

  2. Locate the pattern in the pattern drawer. You will go by the company that makes the pattern, the number on it, and in your size. Ask an associate if you need help. Usually one pattern is suitable for three sizes and is cut out according to your size.

  3. Read the back of the pattern carefully. It contains information on how much fabric and any sewing notions you need.

  4. Choose your fabric and any notions that need to match it, such as buttons and thread. Fabrics come on the bolt in two different widths. Be sure that you have the right width if it matters for your pattern. Look over the list of notions twice to be sure you have everything.

  5. Remove and read the packet of instructions inside the pattern when you get it home. It will tell you every step you need to take in the specific order you need to do it in. Pay attention to all pieces you have to cut out according the item you are sewing.

  6. Unfold and cut out the patterns along the lines indicated for your size for each piece needed. Follow the lines carefully and do not pull at the paper. It is quite thin and tears easily.
