How to Sew a Shoe Storage Bag

A shoe storage bag is great for storing out of season shoes.  You can store them in a location other than your closet and be sure they are dust free.  They will remain in good shape until you need them again.  The bags also come in handy when packing for a trip.  The bags are easy to make with basic sewing experience.

Things you will need to sew a shoe storage bag:

  • Sewing machine

  • Scissors

  • Iron

  • Fabric Thread

  • Ribbon

  • Safety pin

  • Straight pins

  1. Buy the fabric.  A third of a yard of thick cotton thread will do just fine.  You will also need to purchase 18 inches of ½ satin ribbon and thread in order to match with the fabric.

  2. Take the fabric and cut it.  You will notice that the fabric will come folded in half.  Then measure 15 inches from the fold and cut across.  The width should be 12 inches which equates to 1/3 yard.

  3. Take the fabric and turn it so the right sides are facing.  You will then pin all the sides of the fabric from the fold up to the top raw selvage.  Be sure to sew the sides employing a ½ inch seam.

  4. Take the seams and press them open.  You will then turn over a ¼ inch onto the top raw edge.  You will press and turn over a ¾ inch.  Make sure to press the fold.

  5. Take the fold and pin it.  You will then sew all the way around and close to the inside fold.  Leave an opening for two inches.

  6. Use a large safety pin and attach it to one end of the ribbon.  You will then push the safety pin in one side of the opening and work it into the fabric tube into the other side.  Be sure to pull enough of the ribbon through until each side of the ribbon is even.  Next you will turn the bag so the right side is out.  Once you put a pair of shoes into the bag, make sure you pull each side of the ribbon to close the bag.  Then you will make a bow.
