Dip the needle into colored ink.
If you want to create a lighter shade, also dip the needle in water before piercing it into the skin. This will soften the color of the ink and create a shaded effect.
Tilt the needle when piercing the skin to adjust the depth. This will assure that less of the ink will go into the skin, thereby creating a lighter shade than the other colors of the tattoo. To create a darker shade, the depth of the needle should go deeper into the skin.
