How to Sharpen Lawn Mover Blades
Lawn mower blades often become dull over time which causes them to tear your grass opposed to a clean cut. This can leave your lawn looking ragged and uneven. You can easily solve this problem by sharpening the blades of your lawn mower regularly to keep them sharp and cutting like new.
- Turn on your lawn mower and allow it to run until the gas tank is empty and the lawn mower is out of gas. If you have a lot of gas in your tank and you would like to save it you can siphon it out using a standard baster and then replace it when you are done sharpening the blades.
- Remove the spark plug from your lawn mower using a spark plug ratchet of the same size as your spark plug. This is done to prevent the motor from accidentally engaging if you spin the blades during sharpening.
- Place your lawn mower on its side. You want to place it on the opposite side as the air filter, so that the air filter is in the upright position once your lawn mower is turned over on its side. This will prevent your oil from coming out during the process.
- Place a block of wood between the blades and the lawn mower casing to ensure that the blades are not able to turn while you are sharpening them.
- Put on heavy rubber gloves to protect yourself when working with sharp blades.
- Remove the bolts that secure the blades using the appropriate size ratchet set to fit the bolt.
- Repeat step six until you have removed all of the blades from your lawn mower. Be sure to place your bolts in a safe place so that you can re-attach the blades when you are done.
- Secure each blade, and then use a coarse file to file down the dulled edges of your blade until they are as sharp as you desire.
- Repeat step eight until you have sharpened all of the lawn mower blades.
- Reattach the blades to your lawn mower using the bolts that you removed in the beginning. Be sure that you thoroughly tighten the bolts so that your blades are securely attached to your lawn mower.
- Turn the lawn mower back to an upright position.
- Replace the spark plug that you removed.
- Refill the gas tank of your lawn mower, and then test out your blades to see how well they are working now that they are sharpened.
