How to Spike Short Hair

Spiked hair is enjoyed by both men and women. There used to be a time in which spiky hair made a person look as if they just rolled out of bed. It looked unkempt. But now, spiky hair isn't just for the lazy, or for the rebellious. Spiky hair can be even be worn in professional situations, when it's styled the right way.

What You'll Need:

  • Spray Bottle

  • Comb

  • Styling Gel or Hair Spray

  • A Good Haircut

  1. Visit your stylist. They will cut in the length and the style that you need to wear it spiky. If you are going for a polished and professional look, then it's best not to wear the hair longer than two inches. If you are going for an alternative look, then certain parts of your hair will be longer. However, with alternative hairstyles, the back and or the sides of the head will be cut into a buzz, or it will be completely shaved off.

  2. Wet your head. Once your hair is cut to the length, and in the style that you need for it to be, wet your hair. You should wrap a towel or a vinyl salon apron around your neck. Then, wet your hair with the spray bottle that is filled with water. It's best for you to use room temperature water. Don't drench your hair wet, but do get it wet enough so that it starts to feather in your fingers.

  3. Spread hair gel in your hair. Or, you can spray your hair with hair spray. Make sure that you apply enough to create hold for your hair, but don't apply so much so that the styling product looks tacky in your hair. Otherwise, it will start to flake in your hair.

  4. Spike your hair with your fingers if you'd like clumpy and large spikes. If you'd like fine spikes, then use a fine tooth, or a rat tooth comb. The direction that you'd spike the hair in depends on the style. You can spike it straight up, or combed to the front.

  5. Allow your hair to dry. You can either allow your spiked hair to air dry, or you can use a blow dryer diffuser. It's important not to touch your hair until it's dry. Then, it will stay in place.
