How to Spin Nunchaku
Nunchaku are fighting sticks, and they are used in Oriental martial arts. The popularity of Bruce Lee in the 1970s in effect introduced them to the general public. Traditional nunchaku are made from several different materials, but they all are made with two sticks, and are connected to each other with a chain or rope cord.
Learning to use nunchaku is an advanced skill that can make you a deadly weapon when it comes to battling an opponent.
- Grip your nunchaku firmly using your fingers and thumb wrapped around the stick portion of the weapon. Ensure that your thumb and index finger is closest to the center of the weapon. Simultaneously ensure that you are not touching the chain or cord. Extend your arm in front of you, and the second section should be dangling downward.
- Begin with your palm facing downward. Swing the free wood section quickly, and it should swing toward the thumb and index finger. While performing this movement, begin to move your hand in a small, tight circle upward.
- Continue the movement from the previous step, and as your hand reaches the apex of its circle, the chain or cord will be close to touching the back of your hand. Release one stick, and catch the other stick while it’s in motion.
- Continue the circle downward, and close your fingers around the loose wood section around impact.
- Allow the loose nunchaku stick to continue its momentum around the circle.
- Repeat the above steps in reverse order in order to get back to the starting position.
- Practice, practice, practice. Follow the steps and perform the motions slowly at first, and then increase speed gradually until it becomes second nature.
