How to Spot Auto Repair Scams

When you take your car into the shop for repairs, you trust that the mechanic will not try and bilk you out of extra money. However, auto mechanics can try and scam you out of money like any other con artist will. By learning some basic tips, you can save yourself from becoming the victim of an auto repair scam.

  • Assess the cost of repairs. Most people take their car into the shop when one thing in particular is not working properly. Many times, crooked mechanics might try to add on other services that you do not really need, so that they can charge you more. For instance, if you go into a repair shop for an oil change do not let the mechanic talk you into four or five other services that you do not need.

  • Check out the staff. Make sure that all of the technicians are properly certified. You also want to note the professionalism of the staff. Do they provide great customer service? Do they answer all of your questions in a courteous manner? If you encounter rude employees who give you the run around instead of an honest assessment, you should take your business elsewhere.

  • Ensure that the shop handles the make and model of your vehicle. Some auto repair shops only work on a specific model of car. Before you take your car in for repairs, contact the shop and ask them if they service your type of vehicle. You will save yourself time and money by doing this.

  • Ask for a written estimate. Before you pay for anything, get an estimate from the mechanic. An estimate lets you know how much it will cost to get your car fixed. If you do not agree with the price, try to negotiate it down. If that does not work, visit several different auto repair shops and get estimates from each one. Select the shop that offers the best service at the best price.
