How to Stain Teak Furniture
Teak wood is a very durable, smooth hardwood that is commonly used to make outdoor furniture. The sun can damage the wood and give it a gray cast. Staining the wood a darker color will give it more protection from the sun. Learning how to stain teak wood is not difficult and it will lengthen the life of your furniture.
Before staining your teak furniture, you may choose to first cover any scratches with a wood filler. If you prefer the natural look of wood grain showing through, you may want to leave the scratches as they are. When choosing a wood filler, select one that closely matches the color of your unstained furniture. Follow the instructions on the wood filler to cover the scratches.

Instructions
- Use a piece of 120 grit sandpaper to sand the rough areas of the teak furniture.
- Follow with a piece of 220 grit sandpaper to sand the entire piece of furniture.
- Open the can of sanding sealer and use the paintbrush to apply a thick coat of sealer to the furniture.
- Let the sealer soak on the furniture for several minutes and then wipe off the excess sealer with an old rag. Using a sealer will allow the stain to go on more evenly.
- Let the sealer completely dry on the furniture before adding the stain.
- Open the can of stain and use a paintbrush to paint a coat of stain on the furniture. The longer the stain sets on the furniture, the darker it will be.
- Use an old rag to wipe off any stain that does not soak into the furniture.
- Let the stain on the teak furniture completely dry.
- Apply another coat of stain if you would like the color of the furniture to be darker.
- Open the can of finish and with a paintbrush, apply a coat to the teak furniture. A finish is used to help the color of the stain last longer and protect it from fading in areas that are subject to a lot of wear.
