How to Start Basic Lawn Mowing Services on a Budget

Starting a lawn care business can be a lucrative one with little start up costs.  Any time of the year, except for winter, is a good time to start a lawn care business.  Springtime is a good time because people are going to want their lawns ready for summer.  Fall is a good time because people basically hate raking so they are going to want their lawns raked.

  1. Start by promoting light duty services such as lawn mowing, weed whacking and plucking weeds.  By starting small, you can keep your costs low because you won’t need so much equipment right away.

  2. Look at what you might currently have in your garage or barn that you can use now.  Almost everyone has a lawn mower and weed eaters.  There may be other tools you have lying around such as rakes and hoes.  If there are some things that you don’t have, you can easily purchase them without spending a fortune.  You can look at your local newspaper for items that people are selling at a reasonable price.  You can also scour yard sales on weekends for a great deal.

  3. Begin advertising your services by creating flyers from your home computer and hanging them around town where they have bulletin boards such as Laundromats and gas stations.  Once you start getting clients, you can begin to depend on word of mouth.  You can also create business cards from your home computer as well and hand them out to everyone you know.

  4. Build your client list by advertising and word of mouth.  Once you start getting more business than you can handle, you may want to consider hiring an extra person.
