How to Start Human Resources Consulting
Human resources consulting can be a great business venture for individuals who have expertise or training in human resources. Human resources consultants assist companies in finding qualified staff and handling staffing-related issues. If you have a background in human resources and are business savvy, you may consider starting a human resources consulting business.
- Research the human resources consulting businesses in your area. Find out if there are human resources consulting companies in your area, and determine what makes them successful. Figure out ways that you'll be able to distinguish yourself from the competition. If you do not have expertise in human resources consulting, take the required training. There are courses, books and seminars on the topic.
- Develop a business plan. A business plan will help you track your company's progress. It will also help attract funding from investors, if needed. Create a detailed business plan with information obtained from your research. Write your mission statement that states your business goals. Give an analysis of the target market and the competition. Explain how you plan to compete within this market. Include your financial projections for the first three years of business.
- Obtain all required business licenses and permits. Contact your local city, county and state offices to obtain the necessary licenses and permits for your consulting business. Contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to obtain a tax permit.
- Set up an office. Lease an office space and set it up with a desk, printer, computer, fax machine, telephone, bookshelves and seats. Be sure to get high-speed Internet service. Most of the consulting will be done in your clients' locations, but you will need an office for your business.
- Join networking groups in your area. Join your local chamber of commerce and benefit from the networking opportunities that they provide. Attend events where your potential clients gather. Run ads in local newspapers and magazines. Advertising and networking are powerful marketing avenues that will provide you with clients. Consider contacting area businesses in order to acquire more clients.
