How to Receive Certification for Appliance Repair

How to Start My Own Appliance Repair Business

A person who enjoys working with appliances may be able to earn a living by opening a repair business. The safest way to start a repair business is by running it from home until it becomes profitable. The key to achieving early success is to find clients through various marketing methods including print ads and by contacting local appliance stores.

  1. Decide whether to run your appliance repair business from home or at a separate location. You may want to start out at home and then rent a location after you establish a solid reputation. Contact the business license department in your town and fill out the paperwork to obtain a license.

  2. Open a business bank account and work with an accountant to set up your repair business tax structure. Buy the tools you need in order to run your repair service. Finance the tools through a local bank or use the tool supply company if the terms are more favorable. Decide how much to charge your clients for repair work and create a price list.

  3. Advertise your appliance repair business to find clients. Put an ad in the classified section of your local newspaper. Call the phone company and find out when the next Yellow Pages directory goes to print so you can include your business listing.

  4. Design a business card to market your repair service. Print up a supply of cards and have them on hand to give to each of your clients. Offer your clients a discount for sending you a referral or for giving you repeat business.

  5. Visit local appliance stores to establish a working relationship. Many stores also offer their clients a repair service, so do some research to make sure you do not spend any time marketing your service to a store that does not need it. If you specialize in a particular type of appliance repair, make sure to let a store manager know.
