How to Start Work as a Freelance Paralegal

Freelancing is described as a person who works for various clients or companies rather than being an employee at one company. Freelance paralegals are a growing area that became more popular in recent years with the economic slowdown. If you are just getting started freelancing here are some ways that can help you make the right decisions.

  1. A freelance paralegal is also
called a contract position because you do not receive any health
benefits as an employee would, but you also cannot be told what to
do outside the terms of the contract you sign with the company or
client. Your services as a paralegal are retained for a specific
amount of money. Some freelance positions can continue for years
with the same client while others are short term.

  2. Check out the National
Federation of Paralegal Profession. The site offers a complete
section on freelance paralegals and what you can expect working for
different clients. Freelancers in any field need to have excellent
organizational and time management skills in order to meet deadlines
    of their clients.

  3. Call some local attorney offices
and ask if they are looking for freelance paralegals. Sometimes this
is the best way to find new clients. The attorney may be trying to
transition to using a freelancer and you may just be calling at the
    right time.

  4. Look online and register at some
of the job boards. These include CareerBuilder and Monster.com both
of which normally have a large section of paralegals that include
    freelance positions.

  5. Place an ad for services on
Craigslist.org. It is free and gives you a chance to advertise
    yourself as a freelance paralegal.
