How to Start Your Own Home Decor Line

If you have a flare for design and a passion for interior decorating, you might wish to start your own home decor line. While not everyone is successful at this feat, you have to give it a chance to know if you have a true talent. Before you sell 2,000 couches, you must first know how to start your own home decor line.

  1. Enroll in a college that offers programs in home decorating or related to interior design, such as fashion merchandising. Study hard and complete the program. You need to at least complete your associate's degree.

  2. Look for jobs in the field either while you are in school or after you graduate. Work as a buyer or in another similar profession to establish some real-world experience.

  3. Decide if you want to make one single product type or a variety of products. Remember, you are not limited to creating sofas and chairs alone. You may decide to create an entire bathroom product line or focus on curtains for all rooms of the house.

  4. Create a name for your product line. Make it something that is recognizable. Register your business name with your county and state.

  5. Find a location for your products to be manufactured at. If plan to produce in smaller amounts, you may find people who are willing to assemble or sew your products in their own homes or you can manufacture on a larger scale, by using foreign manufacturing companies.

  6. Contact retail stores and small boutiques to find potential buyers for your home decor product line. Meet their demands and continue to find new buyers to expand your business.
