How to Start a Business During the Recession

Starting a business in normal times can be a lot of work and a big risk. Starting one during a recession adds even more pressure. However, just because times are bad doesn't mean that a business won't be profitable. In fact many people who lost their jobs during the recession turned to starting their own business and have been successful.

  1. Decide what type of business you want to start. This is especially crucial during a recession because you need to offer a product or service that people need, rather than want. During a recession, people tend to spend less money on what they want, as those items or services seem frivolous when there is less income in the home.

  2. Use logic to determine what business will be profitable during the recession. For instance, owning a cleaning service can be very profitable during times when the economy is good and people have more money to spend, but maid service would be one of the first luxuries cut from a household budget in leaner times. On the other hand, offering a loan service can be good in rough times. During the recession people are having trouble getting bank loans even with great credit so they will need somewhere to turn.

  3. Start small and scale your business up. During the recession not only are others being careful about how they spend their money, but you should be careful as well. Not all business startups pan out, so taking as little risk as possible is ideal in these times.

  4. Begin your new business as the only employee, or with as few employees as possible to get the business up and running. This will not only keep labor costs down, but if your business is not successful, it will keep you from being stuck in a rough spot and not having the money to pay your employees their earnings.
