How to Start a Children's Museum
Starting a children’s museum is a great idea for most communities. It is a great way to get children interested in science and history. A children's museum will bring many people of all ethnicities, ages and socio-economic levels into the area. For low-income areas a museum can be a fantastic way to give children the opportunity to learn more.
- Determine whether or not your community will be one of those that will benefit from having a children’s museum. Depending upon your location it may not be the best area. You may have to consider finding another different location.
- Write out your business plan. All businesses need a business plan whether you will be a non-profit organization or not. If you are unfamiliar with writing out business plans you will need to seek the help of some with experience in writing out business plans.
- Find out about the rules and regulations about opening a non-profit organization. You will have to fill out the necessary paper work with your local and state government.
- Get the community involved in the location you plan to open up your museum. Hold a meeting to discuss you plans with other business leaders, schools, local churches and community leaders. Print out flyers and pass them out in the neighborhood.
- Raise money to fund your children’s museum. This can be done through fundraising events, donations, and grants. You will find there are many people willing to help those out with a great business plan.
- Start your museum off start. You can always expand once you get a better feel of the business. Continue to hold events and keep the community involved in your museum to make it a success.
