How to Start a Clothes Store

To open a clothing store the owner must first create a business plan. The owner should do some market research to determine the main competition for the new clothes store. By advertising the grand opening, the business owner can help the new store to get off to a fast start.

  1. Decide on a name for your new clothes store. Fill out the paperwork to get a license for the store. Open up a business account with a local bank. Choose a location for the store so you will get a lot of walk-up customers. Talk to an accountant to find out how to structure your clothes store business.

  2. Contact clothing manufacturers and arrange to purchase clothes for your store. Determine how much space you have for the clothing before you place an order. Do some research to find out the best type of clothing to buy so you have the latest fashions available for your customers.

  3. Hire your staff and train them on how you want the store to operate. Have your employees arrange the layout of your store after you receive your inventory. Buy other items for your store, such as cash registers, shelving and display stands.

  4. Advertise your grand opening when you are almost ready to open your store to customers. Put a large ad in the newspaper and pass out flyers to local businesses to promote your grand opening. Call the phone company so you can put a listing in the next Yellow Pages directory.

  5. Schedule all of your employees to work on the day of the grand opening sale. Mark down some clothing to attract customers to the store. Pass out discount coupons to customers, even if they do not buy anything during the sale. Put an expiration date on the coupons so you create a sense of urgency for your customers.
