How to Start a Cosmetology Business

Cosmetology businesses offer good income and stability if the business is run properly and the business plan is followed. When starting a cosmetology business, it is important to consider all aspects of the business before committing, including supplies, space, and advertising.

  1. Develop a business plan for the Cosmetology shop that specifies details about the business and the goals for success, skills that you offer the business, customer demand, market size and location, pricing strategy, funding, and operational information. The business plan is required to securing funding because no financial institution or investor will consider funding the project.

  2. Select a location for the shop that is easily accessible for walk in traffic and parking. Businesses can reduce their exposure if there is not ample parking available.

  3. Price all renovations that are necessary for transforming the rental space into a cosmetology shop. The renovations should include the cost of new plumbing, fixtures, mirrors, chairs, a welcome desk, decorations and appliances. The cost of renovations can cause new business problems if all aspects are not included.

  4. Secure licensees and permits for the business. Check with State and Local officials to see what is required.

  5. Decide what services are offered at the shop and what is the profit margin for each service.

  6. Hire experienced employees for the shop and develop a pay schedule for each stylist and employee. Some shops rent the chair in a salon to a stylist and share in the income generated.

  7. Be an on-site owner because businesses are more successful when the owner is present. Active owners are able to eliminate issues that arise more quickly and successfully.

  8. Advertise the shop Grand Opening, and offer special discounts to encourage customers to switch from another salon.
