How to Start a Delivery Service Business
To start a delivery service business, create a business plan that states what you will deliver and to whom. Hiring reliable drivers, obtaining car insurance, setting up a billing system and researching your tax obligations are a few considerations before starting a delivery business.
- Identify the type of delivery business. Delivering groceries, pharmaceuticals, food, furniture and periodicals are a few options.
- Create a business plan. Indicate the delivery item, the mode of delivery, the target clients and how the business will be funded and marketed.
- Purchase a reliable vehicle. Your business may start small with just one vehicle or require several trucks, depending on what you are delivering. The vehicle(s) must be in good condition to ensure timely delivery of items.
- Contact individuals and businesses in need of deliveries. Pharmacies that service nursing homes often require delivery personnel. Homebound individuals may need groceries delivered on a regular basis to their homes. A neighborhood near a university might need furniture delivered for students who move in for new semesters.
- Hire personnel. As your business grows, you will need additional people to help you carry items or to drive additional vehicles. Look for drivers with a clean driving record.
- Provide liability insurance. Purchase insurance for all drivers or require that they are insured prior to taking the job.
- Establish a billing process. Drivers might collect payment upon delivery or you might set up an electronic system that allows you to bill customers via email.
- Research tax laws. Become familiar with your tax obligations. Keep all receipts of expenses related to starting and maintaining your delivery business.
