How to Start a Designer Clothing Business

Starting your own designer clothing business is an exciting venture. This venture requires determination and patience. This venture is also the start up of a business much like most businesses require a business plan. Your step is to create this business plan.

  1. Complete a bachelor degree program in fashion merchandising. This degree program prepares you for merchandising your designs and instructs you on exactly how to run your designer clothing business.

  2. Complete an internship program within the fashion industry. Apply for several of these internship programs, as they are highly coveted at the beginning of your junior year. By performing well in this internship it is possible to generate a connection with a mentor. A mentor in the fashion industry aids in the success of your designer clothing line.

  3. Design several designer clothing collections. The reason for designing more than one collection is to enable you to have backups in case some pieces do not work well within either collection.

  4. Secure capital to use to start up your designer clothing business. This capital could come from investors or from a finance company. If you opt to solicit funds from investors you should present your business plan to these investors. If you plan to take out a loan you present this business plan to the finance company.

  5. Create your inventory. Secure a contract with a merchandising and/or sewing plant to create your designer clothing collections. This merchandising and/or sewing plant will generate these designer-clothing collections based on orders received from buyers.

  6. Create a website from which to sell your designer clothing collections. Once this website is published to the web launch an aggressive marketing campaign. A marketing consultant could aid you in this marketing campaign.
