How to Start a Dog Boarding Kennel

A dog boarding kennel is a cheaper alternative to hiring an expensive pet sitter. Many people keep their dogs in a kennel when they are away at work or going out. This keeps the dog safe and prevents it from making messes in the home.

  1. Find a good location for housing multiple dogs. This location should be somewhere with an office and room for placing several kennels. The more kennels you have, the more dogs you will be able to house at a time, and of coarse the more money you will be able to make. The location should also have plenty of room for things the dogs will need such as food.

  2. Market your dog kennel business by placing ads on Internet classified websites and in newspapers. You should make sure that the ad space is for your local demographic, as this is where most if not all of your business will come from.

  3. Build a website with your rates and plenty of pictures of your facilities. Make your location and your pictures look inviting. Most people don't want to actually have to put their pets in a kennel, so showing how professional your kennel is will help them feel more comfortable leaving their beloved dog.

  4. Trade business with other dog professionals such as dog walkers and pet groomers. Let them know you will send business to them if they send business to you in return. This is a great way to get business because it's essentially free advertising.

  5. Keep the dogs well fed and happy. Doing this will keep your customers happy and the next time they need their dog to be kenneled, or they have a friend that needs one kenneled, they will come to you.
