How to Start a Dog Training Business

Dog training is a passion and hobby for people all over the nation; however, a properly motivated canine enthusiast can turn that passion into a lucrative career. A dog training company gets most of its business from the many people who purchase dogs without learning proper training techniques beforehand, and are then forced to consult experts for help.

  1. Develop a solid background in dog training before you consider starting a business. One way to do this is to earn a degree in a program such as animal science, during which time you can work part-time at a local obedience school in order to learn practical, hands-on training techniques. Although this sort of background is ideal and will impress most clients, all that is truly necessary to start a dog training business is extensive, documented experience in canine obedience training; education is optional.

  2. Take a few business classes. Completing coursework in small business classes at your local university or community college will help you to succeed in your goal by teaching you the basics of operating a small business.

  3. Decide on the services that your dog training business will offer. This step is largely dependent upon your skills and abilities. You can offer basic services such as general obedience training and puppy obedience training, or you can specialize in training see-eye dogs or therapy dogs if you are qualified to do so.

  4. Fulfill all of the requirements necessary to start a small business in your area. You will have to check the local and state-level laws in your region to complete this step.

  5. Market your company. Develop a website, advertise in local newspapers and in online communities specific to your area, such as craigslist.
