How to Start a Home Computer Repair Business

Knowing how to fix computers is a marketable skill. Starting a home computer repair business requires training and preparation. A professional home office conveys a confident image. Building a business from scratch requires marketing materials and satisfied clients to serve as references.

  1. Learn how to repair computers. Computer repair skills may be learned in a formal setting, such as in a computer repair class. Alternatively, teach yourself how to repair computers through a process of trial and error. Take advantage of computer forums and books to accelerate the learning process.

  2. Begin repairing computers for friends and relatives. Choose as your first set of customers friendly people who will have patience as you perfect your skills. Ask them to spread the word about your services.

  3. Identify a place in your home for greeting customers. Create a professional workspace that contains only computers, a desk and the tools necessary for performing repairs. Clients will also need a place to sit when they bring computers over and explain the problem.

  4. Research the competition in order to establish appropriate fees. Large companies benefit from being a trusted brand and can afford to charge higher prices. Attract clients by setting affordable fees. Avoid charging too little, because it may imply that your services are not on par with the competition.

  5. Market your home computer repair business. Design business cards with a logo. Develop a website that targets the right group of clients. If living near a university setting, students may be your main customers. In the suburbs, older adults may be your target audience.
