How to Start a Kitchen Design Business

The kitchen is a very important part of a home, and people like to remodel this area. If you have a background in the interior design field and are looking for a way to be your own boss, starting a kitchen design business is a great option for you. Keep in mind that it is vital to offer quality service for your business to thrive.

  1. Find out the licensing requirements. In many states, you are required to have a college degree as well as a certain number of years of experience in order to be issued a license as an interior designer. Since kitchen design is an interior design project, you would need a license. Check with the appropriate office in your state about this issue. Perhaps you can bypass this licensing law by satisfying some other requirements.

  2. Set up your business office. You will need an office from which to run your interior design business. You can operate from home and use a garage, room or even a corner in your home, but if you will have clients come over, then make sure your entire house is presentable. You can also decide to own a design showroom, and in that case you will have to purchase some inventory to display.

  3. Set your fees. Research your competitors to get an idea of how to set your rate. It is a good idea to price your services similar to your competitors' prices for similar design projects. Take some time to determine the best rate for your services.

  4. Market your kitchen design services. Create business cards and hand them out to people who might need your services. Distribute fliers to high-traffic areas in the city or town. Place ads in the local newspapers and telephone books. Create a website describing your kitchen design services and be sure to include your contact details. Join local business associations and participate in networking events.
