How to Start a Newspaper

Starting your own newspaper is a difficult task. Writing and publishing your first issue requires a lot of research, writing and hard work. You must work hard to find your audience, captivate the audience and keep them coming back for more. Your newspaper can be successful with a lot of hard work and dedication.

  1. Obtain a business license. Visit the local city hall in order to complete the business license application. You will need to pay an application fee in order to obtain a business license. Find out about any additional permits that are required for a newspaper business in your jurisdiction.

  2. Develop a survey that will help you to learn about your future newspaper audience. It is important to determine the number of people in the area who read a newspaper or are interested in reading a newspaper, as this will help to determine the success of the newspaper. Ask some additional questions to learn about what your audience is interested in. Be sure to include those topics and issues in your new publication. This will help you to grab the attention of your audience.

  3. Create a business plan. Your business plan needs to include all of the details that are necessary to starting your own newspaper business. Include the estimated start-up costs, your plans for hiring reporters, editors and publishers and a two-year profit projection.

  4. The costs of starting a newspaper are relatively low. If you plan on hiring a couple of reporters or an editor to help you, you will need to have the funds available to pay them a salary. In this case, it might be necessary for you to obtain funding to start the paper. If this is the case for you, contact your local bank to begin the business loan application process.

  5. Decide how often you want to publish your paper. You can publish the newspaper monthly, weekly, biweekly or daily, depending on your needs and the amount of time that you can dedicate to the paper.

  6. Hire help. If you need to hire reporters or editors, take the time to review applications and resumes and interview potential candidates.

  7. Seek advertisers. Running advertisements in your paper will provide you with the income necessary to keep it running. Visit local businesses and encourage them to run an advertisement in your newspaper. Try to develop advertising contracts that will ensure long-term income for the newspaper.

  8. Decide how you will distribute your newspaper. You might want to hire independent newspaper carriers, or you may decide to sell your newspaper in local coffee shops and convenience stores.

  9. Expand your audience. One way to expand your audience, obtain more subscribers and increase your profits is to provide a free edition of your newspaper. This will expose your audience to your style and the information that your paper provides. Once people see the quality of your newspaper, they will hopefully decide to subscribe.
