How to Start a Puppy Training Class

If you love puppies and would love to spend your day surrounded by happy, wagging tails, then you might want to consider a career as a dog trainer. You can become certified in a short time, then specialize in working with puppies.

  1. Find a local dog training school and complete the required courses to receive your certification as a dog trainer. Since your primary goal is to work with puppies, make sure your school has a curriculum that features puppy training as a basic with your initial dog training. This will save you money and show your potential customers that you are responsible. Working with puppies requires much more patience than older dogs, especially since they are so much more energetic.

  2. Decide on a location. Once you have been certified, you should start thinking about where you want to hold your classes. Most people start from home, using their backyard or basement for the first few classes. If you don't have that type of space, you can look for a small rental space that won't break your budget. Whatever location you choose, you must have a place to bring the puppies indoors if the weather is not optimal.

  3. Create a business plan that includes your current budget and accounts payable. Remember, during your initial start-up, you should have a financial cushion until you build your client base. You should also have business cards and if possible, a website that people can visit.

  4. Purchase supplies. Training puppies means treats. You should have a good selection for the dogs to choose from. Most puppies are not housebroken yet; that takes time. Make sure you have enough cleaning agents to keep the smells at a minimum and be sure to utilize environmentally friendly cleaners.

  5. Get out and advertise. Try visiting local animal shelters and make contacts with the staff and potential customers. Another great place to establish your new business is at local grocery stores, libraries and pet shops. Holidays are a wonderful time to get your name out. So many animal lovers like to take pictures with their new puppies. It would be great if you could be there to observe the puppy's behavior and suggest training.

  6. Keep your business in the public eye by rewarding your clients with special tokens of appreciation. Instead of handing your customer a simple certificate showing how their puppy has completed training, create specialized awards.
