How to Start a Workout and Fitness Plan

One of the most made resolutions for New Year's is to lose weight. Men and women both make that same resolution every year. By the end of January most of these many people turn into a small amount of people that decide that they need to change their lifestyle to become healthy and not just to lose weight. The proper mental attitude is essential for succeeding in any workout and fitness plan.

  • Assess your fitness needs. Identify whether you really need to lose weight. Identify the areas of your body that you need to work on. Are you going to join a gym, hire a personal trainer or workout at home?

  • Develop your workout and fitness plan once you assess your personal needs. Decide how you want to target your goals. Make sure that your goals and your plan are realistic and attainable. A good workout and fitness routine should consist of cardio and strength training.

  • Ease slowly into the routine. Don't overdo your workout the first couple of days, you might get discouraged. Your muscles will be sore. A little soreness is okay but if it is unbearable you might want to check with a doctor; you might have torn muscles.

  • Build up to your goal gradually. When strength training use weights that are challenging but not too heavy. Do two sets of eight repetitions, or reps, for each exercise to begin. The best way to burn calories and lose weight is cardio, 30 minutes, three times a week to start. Increase your times and reps until you have reached your set goal.

  • Be consistent and try to make the workout part of your normal life. If you have to stop for any reason, get back into the routine as soon as possible; you have to keep at it to see results.

  • Change your eating habits. Eat more protein and less sugar and carbohydrates. Read nutrition books that help you decide on a healthier approach to eating. Keep a food diary; it helps to know what you are eating and how much.  Eat three small meals a day with two healthy snacks a day. Don't skip meals.
