How to Start an In-Home Child Care
Many women are choosing to stay at home with their children while earning an income. Starting an in-home child care service is one of the most popular home businesses for women. Most states require that a child care provider become licensed. In order to become licensed, you must follow certain rules, regulations and procedures.
- Contact your state licensing agency to become a licensed child care provider. Fill out the application and submit well in advance of the date you wish to open your in-home child care business; it may take up to six months to become licensed.
- Visit your City Hall or Department of Taxation to receive your business license. You will receive a tax ID number, as well.
- Visit your local Health Department to obtain your health card. Fill out the application for a health permit and receive a health card just for your child care business.
- Get certified in CPR and First Aid. Contact your local Red Cross or community college and take CPR and First Aid certification classes.
- Prepare your home for the child care business. Cover electrical outlets and place baby gates in areas where you don't want the children to be. Store medicine in a safe place. Lock kitchen cupboards. Place toys on the inside and outside.
- Set up a napping area with blankets and mats. Place a video monitor up if you plan on having the napping area in a separate room -- licensing agents require it.
- Complete a background check of all potential employees. Interview and complete finger-printing.
- Prepare for home inspections from the Fire, Health and Licensing departments. Get ready to open up for service once you are approved.
