How to Start an Online Nursing Journal Club

Starting a nursing journal allows nurses to stay abreast with the current innovations and practices within the medical industry. A journal club consist of members that research, critique and discuss new writings about various aspects of the nursing medical practice field.

  1. Find potential members to join the journal club. Look for club members who are staff at your workplace, students currently enrolled in a nursing program or peers within the medical industry.

  2. From the selected club members, choose a club leader. The club leader should be considered an expert in the field. A top choice for club leader could be a college professor in the medical field, senior staff at a medical facility or a member of the Nursing Research Council. Examine your members and select the best of the best.

  3. Decide on the structure and requirement guidelines for meetings. The length of the meetings, the frequency and reading requirements are important concepts you'll need to consider when planning your meetings. To meet the schedule needs of all the members, sticking to a 30-minute meeting once a month may be the easiest schedule to adhere to.

  4. Determine how the meetings will be structured. The leader will generally begin the meeting with an article up for discussion with questions related to it. Members are then encouraged to analyze the article, answer the questions and come up with any further questions.

  5. Select a free website hosting company to set up your site with. You can also consider free live chat options such as Skype and ooVoo.

  6. Once you have found your members, leader and completed the structure and frequency plan for your meetings, you'll need to schedule your journal clubs first meeting.
