How to Stock a Nursery
A new baby is both a joy and a blessing, yet many new parents may find themselves overwhelmed at the idea of stocking their baby's nursery. From cribs to clothing and accessories, parents may wonder what items they truly need and what items they can live without. Buying all the basic items for your nursery will ensure you are well prepared for your new arrival.
- Pick out a crib for your baby. If you will be co-sleeping, look for a bassinet or co-sleeper. These can be used for approximately the first six months of a baby's life. After that, your baby will need to transition to a crib. Look for a convertible crib that can be used as a toddler bed or daybed when your baby is older. Choose a mattress that fits into the crib properly. Buy four or five crib sheets that securely fit the type of mattress you choose.
- Choose dressers or a wardrobe for storing all of your baby's clothing. You will need sufficient room to keep all of your baby's clothing neatly stored, so look for sturdy dressers that have several drawers large enough to accommodate your baby's wardrobe. Purchase a hamper large enough for storing all of your baby's dirty clothing too.
- Find a changing table that complements your nursery decor. Look for a sturdy changing table that has side-rails and straps to keep your baby safe during diaper changes. Tables with plenty of storage drawers or baskets are ideal for organizing all of your baby's toiletry items. If you won't be using a regular changing table, buy a few washable changing pads.
- Stock your baby's nursery with the basics. Select a few packages of newborn size diapers, as well as size one diapers. Choose soaps, lotions and wipes that are for use on sensitive skin and designed for infants. Pick a detergent that is hypoallergenic and free from perfumes and dyes, so it won't irritate your newborn's skin. Purchase diaper cream, baby fingernail clippers and an infant thermometer.
- Keep the nursery stocked with plenty of clothing and blankets. Look for items that can be easily put on or removed, such as one-piece outfits with zippers or snaps. Aim for at least ten one-piece outfits, ten zippered pajamas, five undershirts and five pairs of leggings. If your baby will be born in the winter, pick out an infant-sized snowsuit, mittens and fitted hat for your baby. If you will be having a summer baby, buy a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen (consult your pediatrician for their recommendations on when it is appropriate to use sunscreen.) Swaddling blankets are important for keeping your baby secure and comfortable. Buy four to five baby blankets for keeping your baby wrapped in. Avoid laying your baby down at night with a blanket, instead, have two or three wearable blankets on hand for dressing your baby in at night.
- Breastfeeding moms will want to keep the nursery stocked with breast pads, Lansinoh cream and a breast pump. Formula feeding moms will need bottles, nipples and formula.
- Choose a few small toys to entertain your baby. Items like a mobile that can be attached to the side of the crib, small teething toys and soft stuffed animals are all good choices.
