How to Stop Home Mail Delivery
If you are leaving on vacation or an extended business trip, you may want to consider stopping your mail from coming to your home. Mail delivery while you away for long periods of time can pile up and let others know you are not home. To be safe, stop home delivery of your mail while you are gone.
- Go to your local post office and ask the postmaster for a hold mail form. Filling out this form will grant the post office permission to hold your mail from home delivery for a period of no longer than 30 days.
- Fill out the hold mail form. You will need to fill the form out completely. Provide your name, address and the exact date you want your mail to stop being delivered to your home. The form will also ask what date you want your home delivery to start again. You must also sign the hold mail form and date it.
- Take the hold mail form to the post office one week before your home mail delivery stops. Make sure to personally hand the form to your postmaster or mail clerk. Your home delivery cannot be stopped if the form is not given to an official United States Postal worker.
- Call or visit your post office one day before your home mail delivery is to be suspended. Check with the postal clerk to ensure the date is correct and no mail will be delivered while you are away.
- Check with your post office the day you arrive back to your home to make sure your home delivery will resume as stated on your hold mail form.
