How to Store Tires and Rims

When one gets a new set of tires and rims, the old ones are often saved as spares. These should be stored properly in order to ensure their quality. The most important part is to make sure they are clean and covered.

  1. Store your tires and rims clean. All dirt and debris should be removed before storing your tires or rims. This will help to keep the tire in better condition while in storage.

  2. Cover the tires and rims properly. You can put them in a large trash bag or wrap them in a plastic tarp. The covering will provide protection to the tires from water or moisture that could cause deterioration. It can also help to prevent the evaporation on the oil in the tire.

  3. Store the tires and rims in an appropriate place. You want a climate controlled area out of weather elements; somewhere cool and dry is preferable. A basement is an ideal place for the storage because normally there is a lot of space available. A garage is another great location for keeping tire and rims if you have the room. You can stack them, but be careful not to stack them too high as that could be dangerous.

  4. Check tires that have been stored for a long period of time. If a tire sits in one spot too long, it can begin to deteriorate on that side. You can prevent this by rotating the tires, especially if they are stacked up.
