How to Straight Pipe a Truck

Placing straight pipes on a truck can make it louder and more attractive. Straight pipes replace a truck's regular exhaust and reroute it to run along each side of the truck. Some people prefer to hire a professional mechanic to install straight pipes on their truck, while others have the tools and knowledge to do the installation themselves.

Items needed:

  • Jacks

  • Jacks stands

  • Reciprocating saw

  • Welder

  • Welding mask

  • Gloves

Instructions:

  1. Place a jack under each side of the truck. Jack the truck up to a height that allows you to crawl under the truck and work comfortably. You may also want to use jack stands to help hold the truck up. Jack stands act as a backup in case the jacks slip out from under the truck. They help protect you from injury and your truck from damage.

  2. Locate the catalytic converter on the truck's exhaust. The catalytic converter is oval-shaped and stands out from the rest of the exhaust. Use a reciprocating saw to cut the catalytic converter off the exhaust. Be sure to make the cut smooth and even.

  3. Hold the new exhaust up to the area where the catalytic converter was removed. Use a marker to mark the spots on the exhaust where it needs to be cut. Use the reciprocating saw to cut the new exhaust to the right length.

  4. Hold the new exhaust in place and use the welder to weld it into place. Make sure the exhaust is lined up straight and there are no gaps between the new exhaust and the existing exhaust systems. Pay special attention to the ends while welding them in place. The ends should match up perfectly. Wear gloves and a welding mask to protect your face and hands while welding the exhaust in place.

  5. Remove the jack stand and use the jack to lower the truck back to the ground. Start the truck and leave it in park. Give the truck some gas and listen to the new straight pipes you installed.
