How to Stream Videos to your iPhone or IPod Touch
Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch devices allow you to watch video conveniently in the palm of your hand. However, they need video to be encoded in a particular way and stored on the device to watch them through the normal interface. With free apps available on the iTunes App Store, it is possible to watch videos of any file format and stream them over WiFi, 3G or 4G.
Things you will need:
- iTunes – Available at http://www.apple.com/iTunes
- Digital video
- Digiarty Software’s Air Playit app – available at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-playit-streaming-video/id449212860?ls=1&mt=8
- Digiarty Software’s Air Playit Server – available at http://www.airplayit.com/download/airplayitserver_setup.exe
- An iPhone or iPod touch running iOS version 4.0.1 or higher.
- An available Wi-Fi, 3G, or 4G connection.
Installing the Air Playit Server
- Power on your computer.
- Download Air Playit Server.
- Launch the installer when download completes.
- Choose your desired language from the drop down box and click “Next.”
- Click “Next.”
- Read the License Agreement.
- Click the radio button next to “I accept the agreement.”
- Click “Next.”
- Choose your folder you would like to install to by clicking “Browse” and locating the folder.
10. Click “OK.”
11. Click “Next” twice.
12. Set icon preferences by toggling the check boxes next to “Create a desktop icon” and “Create a Quick Launch icon.”
13. Click “Next.”
14. Click “Install.”
Configuring the Air Playit Server
- Launch Air Playit. This can be located on the Start Menu, by clicking “All Programs,” “Digiarty” and “Air Playit.”
- Click the “Shared Folders” tab in the Air Playit interface.
- Click “Add Folder” to add a video folder to the list.
- Click “Browse” in the folder addition window to choose a folder.
- Click the folder.
- Click “OK.”
- Type the name you want the folder to appear as into the field labeled “Sharing Name.”
- Click “OK.”
- Repeat the process until you have shared all the content you want to share.
Accessing Video Streams on iPhone or iPod Touch
- Install the Air Playit App using iTunes.
- Launch the Air Playit App by tapping it’s icon on the screen of your device.
- Add your server by tapping the “Add local server” button.
- Choose your server from the list provided. If your server does not appear on the list, tap “Specify Address Manually” and enter the name of your server as it appears in the Air Playit Server on your computer.
- Tap the server on the main server listing to access the video streams.
- Tap the folder for the video you want to view.
- Tap the video you want to view.
- Tap “Play” to begin watching the video.
Updates to your video drivers may be found in a number of locations:
Microsoft Windows Update
- Power on your computer.
- Launch Windows Update from the Start Menu. It is located under “All Programs.”
- Click the text that includes “Optional Updates are Available” to view any video card driver upgrades available. If there is nothing listed here, there may still be updates on the manufacturer website.
- Click “Important” on the bar on the left of the Windows Update interface.
- Click the empty check box at the top of the updates listing. This should place a check in all the update boxes.
- Click the check box at the top of the updates listing again. This should remove the check from all update boxes. This will ensure nothing is updating other than your video card drivers.
- Click “Optional” on the bar on the left of the Windows Update interface.
- Read the updates listed.
- Check the box next to listings if they contain “nVidia," "ATI" or "Intel Graphics.” These are the most common video cards currently on the market. If you are unsure of which option is your graphics card, click an entry and select “More Information” from the bar on the right to view additional information about the device.
10. Click “OK.”
11. Click “Install Updates.”
12. Wait for the install process to complete and reboot the computer if requested.
Manufacturer’s Website
- Power on your computer.
- Click your “Start Menu.”
- Click on “My Computer” or “Computer.”
- Click “Properties” on the context menu.
- Click “Device Manager” in the upper-right corner of the System Information screen.
- Click the arrow next to “Display Adapters.”
- Click any devices listed and choose "Properties." The manufacturer will be listed under "Manufacturer" on the "General" tab.
- Launch your preferred web browser.
- Type the address listed for your manufacturer into the address bar. For Intel, type "http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect." For ATI, type "http://www2.ati.com/drivers/auto/amddriverdownloader.exe." For nVidia type, "http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx."
10. Press the “Enter” key. The site should load and scan your system for driver updates.
11. Complete the driver installation wizard for your manufacturer.
12. Reboot the computer to apply all changes.
