How to Strength Train for Break Dancing
Break dancing requires a lot of strength and flexibility in order for the dancer to give a good performance. A strong upper body is a necessity for break dancers, as is a strong midsection. The more strength training a break dancer does the easier it will be to pull off a solid dance routine.
- Begin a break dance strength training workout by thoroughly warming up your entire body. Do some push-ups and stretches as well as core exercises such as sit-ups or v-ups. Once you warm up your muscles take a short water break, then move on to the more difficult parts of the break dance workout.
- To add strength to your arms, do some dumbbells curls for your biceps and triceps extensions for your triceps. Use a light amount of weight so you can perform at least 10 repetitions for three sets. Stretch your arms once you finish the last set.
- Work on your chest strength by doing dumbbell bench presses. Use a pair of dumbbells that you can handle for three sets of 10 repetitions. Train your back muscles by doing pull-ups. Perform at least 10 pull-ups for three sets, and wear a weighted vest if you want to further increase your back development.
- Do dumbbell shoulder presses and side raises to work your shoulder muscles. Use strict form and do not perform the exercises too fast. Take a break after you do three sets and stretch once again.
- Use an exercise mat to finish your workout. Practice some simple break dance moves to work your muscles, until you are unable to support your bodyweight any longer. Evaluate your performance the next time you break dance to see if the strength training workout is sufficient. Increase the difficulty of the workout if necessary by adding more exercises or using heavier weights.
