How to Strengthen a Fiberglass Tub
A fiberglass bathtub is a good choice for a homeowner that is looking for a quality, yet inexpensive tub. It does require the proper maintenance to keep it looking good because it can become worn looking over a period of time. There is a way to strengthen the fiberglass, which is something that you can easily do yourself.
How to Strengthen a Fiberglass Tub
- Use a de-waxing cleaner and a soft cloth to thoroughly clean the bathtub.
- Check the fiberglass for signs of damage or weakness by tapping the bathtub with the back of a screwdriver. If a hollow sound is heard, it means that there is a weakness in that area.
- Use a handheld grinder to grind down any weak spots detected in the tub and then clean the area using a damp cloth.
- Use the grinder to sand the entire surface of the tub, which will roughen the surface to improve adhesion.
- Cut some fiberglass sheets to fit over the weak areas of the tub that need to be strengthened.
- Use a paintbrush to apply some resin to the surface of the tub where the fiberglass is going to be placed.
- Place the fiberglass sheets on the resin and apply a second coat of resin over the sheets.
- Use a metal roller to press the sheets down securely against the original fiberglass.
- Allow the resin to dry for approximately 12 hours.
- Apply another coat of resin over the fiberglass sheets and then place another piece of fiberglass on top of it. Apply another coat of resin and allow it to dry for another 12 hours.
- Apply one final coat of resin and allow to dry for approximately 24 hours.
