How to Strip Deck Paint
Repainting your deck and protecting it with a weatherproofing sealant is a great way to prolong the decks life. You must first strip away all the old paint first. This isn't a hard project, but probably will take some time.
Things You'll Need:
- Paint Stripper
- Deck Cleaner
- Power Washer
- Pencil
- Paper
- Tape Measure
- Roller
- Measure your decks dimensions and write them down. Make sure you include the steps if you plan on stripping the paint off them as well.
- Purchase paint stripper and deck cleaner at a local home improvement store. The amount of paint stripper and deck cleaner you purchase will depend on how many square feet your deck is. There should be a representative at the store who can help you purchase the right amount of each product.
- Rent a power washer from the home improvement store or borrow one from a friend. All the supplies should be budget friendly.
- Read the directions for the paint stripper to see what is used to apply it. Most of the time a paint roller will work or something similar you should have stored away somewhere.
- Apply the paint stripper in a small section and let it sit for a few minutes. Be careful to not use too much paint stripper because it could cause damage to the wood.
- Spray the small area you applied the paint stripper with the pressure water. The paint should come up fairly easy. Repeat this process until all the paint is removed.
