How to Study and Pass a State Life Insurance Exam
Statistics show that less than 70 percent of applicants pass their states' life insurance licensing exam on the first try. These exams can cost in excess of $100 and you are not able to work in the field until you pass. Here are a few tips on how to study and pass the state life insurance exam hopefully the first time around.
- Complete the required education or classes for your state - These are often offered in many different formats such as online, face-to-face, and even evening and weekend classes, but you cannot register for the exam prior to taking and passing this training.
- Ask for help - If you are already contracted with a company, ask them for study materials, or study guides for the exam. They often will have exam study books or other materials in addition to those that you receive in class. They will also be able to give you valuable pointers that are specific to the exam in your state.
- Utilize your study materials - Thoroughly go through all of your study materials including the practice exams that are included. These drive home valuable points and sometimes reflect very similar questions to the questions on the state exam.
- Practice all parts of the exam including the necessary calculations - The state exam is timed and if you are not comfortable with what you are supposed to be doing it is easy to run out of time.
- Score your practice exams - Look for areas of weakness. Review and focus on these areas.
- Repeat steps 3 to 5 - Repear until you feel that you are ready to take the exam.
- Use good test taking strategies - Read the questions completely, do not get hung up on time consuming questions, if in doubt eliminate the known wrong answers to narrow your choices, etc. Ensure that you get a good nights sleep prior to the exam and eat a balanced but not heavy meal.
