How to Survive Parenting a Child With ADHD

Becoming a parent is one of the best feelings in the world. However, sometimes life throws a curve and children are diagnosed with special needs. Surviving parenthood with a child that has ADHD is possible with a little patience and understanding.

  • Talk about it. Sometimes parents are afraid to talk about special needs. Choosing to acknowledge ADHD is the first step in surviving parenthood. Trying to hide it or pretend it is not there will only make it harder to cope with.

  •  Meet with other parents of children with ADHD. Parenting a child with ADHD is a hard job, but parents all over the country are doing it. Find a support group of parents who are also parenting a special needs child.  Talking and socializing with other parents that have the same struggles will make this journey just a little easier.

  • Try to look past the behavior. Being a parent to a child with ADHD means acquiring a lot of patience and trying to remain calm. Even when your child is giving you a hard time, try to look past the attitude and behavioral issues. Think about the good memories you have made with your child, especially when times get hard.

  • Let the child play.  A child with ADHD needs to burn off lots of energy. Once a week, take all the kids out of the house and let them play. It may be easier taking your children to a familiar face so that fewer breakdowns happen. The child will be grateful for the chance to run off excess energy and it will provide a moment of freedom from their ADHD.

  • Do not focus on issue. Dwelling on ADHD and how it will change your life in a negative way will not make things better. Instead, do not dwell on it. There will be hard times with your child, but there will also be good times. Cherish all of the memories, move on and tell others about your happy, sad and crazy times as a parent to a child with ADHD.
