How to Swim for Exercise

If you have problems with physically moving or suffer from joint injuries, then you should consider swimming for low-impact exercise. The best results are accomplished when done a minimum of five days per week. There are a few things to consider when incorporating swimming into your exercise routine.

  • Visit your family doctor. You want to visit the doctor for a physical before starting any exercise program. Patients should also discuss their workout plans swimming as the best exercise for their weight loss goals. Doctors are able to give advice on the right diet plan and exercise routine for your lifestyle.

  • Find a location for swimming. One of the best locations for swimming is at the gym. The staff on hand should be familiar with first aid procedures and CPR. If you have a pool at home, then you can use it for swimming exercises. The pool should also be large enough for doing laps.

  • Set a fitness goal when entering an exercise program. Examples of goals are to lose 10-pounds within two months or to swim at a minimum of three days a week. The goals should be realistic and attainable. People are more likely to complete their training program when trying to meet goals.

  • Start slowly and gradually increase your time. You want to start swimming at a slow pace when starting a new training program. If you start quickly and overexert the body, then this could lead to injuries and burn out your body. You can start by swimming five to 10 minutes per session then gradually increase the time.

  • Take a swimming class. Most people can benefit from taking swimming lessons when trying to lose weight. If you are new to swimming then you will need to combine the activity with another cardiovascular exercise like running. New swimmers have limitations because of needing to put in strenuous efforts to lose weight.
