How to Teach Children Physical Fitness

Most children learn about physical fitness from their parents. It is important for parents to teach their children about eating healthy and being active. Parents also have to lead by example or the message will not register with the child. Read on to find out how to introduce your child to leading a healthy lifestyle.

1. Teach children to stretch before working out. Stretching is a very important aspect of physical fitness. It gets the blood flowing and gives the body freedom of movement. Stretch before and after a workout routine. Stretching afterwards will help with balancing and relaxing tight muscles.

2. Participate in a physical activity with your children. Many children are encouraged to do good when having an active role in an activity. There are different ways to work out such as playing tennis or participating in an aerobics routine. Allow the child to take on the position of being the coach. If you are doing sit-ups, then allow the child to hold the stopwatch and cheer you on. When it is their turn, parents will take on the role as coach and offer encouragement. Making physical fitness fun will encourage the child to be competitive and actually enjoy exercising.

3. Teach children how to use weights. If you want to incorporate weight training into your child’s fitness routine, then you want to talk to a pediatrician about the right time to introduce weight training. Small children should explore weights while under the supervision of parents. Most children will notice that the weights are heavy and will think parents are super heroes because of being able to lift them. Weight training will encourage children to be strong like dad and mom.

4. Drink plenty of water when working out. Teach children about maintaining proper hydration. The body has to stay hydrated when performing physical activities, which is essential for comfort, safety and performance.  When participating in activities with children, you want to get in the habit of taking or scheduling water breaks.

5. Eating healthy is important when teaching physical fitness. Start teaching children to eat vegetables and fruits at an early age. Every meal should include five portions of fruits and vegetables. You should also give your child a snack which consists of fruit and vegetables. If you get the child in the habit of eating healthy at an early age, then you child will be more likely to reach for an apple instead of a candy bar.
