How to Teach College Online
The age of technology has brought with it much advancement. One of those advancements is the ability for teachers and students to connect online in a virtual classroom to obtain a college education. Teaching online is similar to teaching in a classroom, except you can do so right from the comfort of your home.
- Take a course of study in the area of teaching that you wish to pursue. Most online teaching positions require instructors to hold a Master’s degree in the field in which they are applying to teach.
- Acquire previous teaching experience by working as a teacher in a classroom setting for a minimum of 2 years. This is a requirement for teaching online through most colleges and universities.
- Locate a college or university that is hiring for an online teaching position in the field in which you are qualified.
- Apply for and get hired for the online teaching position.
- Attend a training class provided for new online instructors to help you learn how to organize and run a virtual classroom. Most colleges and universities that offer distance learning programs have a training course in place to help new online teachers become comfortable with teaching in a virtual setting.
- Create class policies, a course syllabus and instructor contact documents and upload these to the virtual classroom where they can be accessed by the students in the class.
- Upload materials and instructional videos that you would like students to have access to when completing their assignments. All materials in an online teaching setting are to be uploaded in a digital format.
- Create a questions thread in the discussion area of the classroom where students can easily reach you to address any questions or concerns that they may have about the course or course materials used.
