How to Teach ESL Online

English may be taught from any location with online access. To teach ESL online, become a certified teacher. Join the faculty of a language school or a college that offers classes online. Use a variety of technological tools to capture students' attention.

  1. Obtain ESL or TEFL certification. These programs teach you how best to guide others through the language learning process. Some organizations hire individuals without certification who are fluent English speakers.

  2. Apply for an ESL teaching position. Visit the websites of colleges, language schools and the training departments of corporations to look for job openings. Some programs offer training or pay for ideal candidates to get ESL certification. Focus on employers that offer online ESL courses.

  3. Prepare ESL lesson plans. Determine the needs of your students. They may be learning English for professional or academic reasons or strictly for enjoyment. Structure the class to meet their needs. Serious students who must learn English by a certain timeline will expect a more intense teaching approach than recreational learners.

  4. Utilize a wide range of Web tools. Teach ESL online using video conferencing tools, audio files and ESL software. Test all equipment before the start of each session.

  5. Integrate various teaching methods for diverse learning styles. Some learners need to hear English words pronounced repeatedly. Others need visual images that contextualize words and phrases. A third group may need to learn by doing, which in this case may mean speaking English as much as possible and/or writing down new vocabulary words.
