How to Teach Preschoolers About Color

Learning colors should be fun for both you and your preschooler.  Children should know their colors before starting kindergarten, and will be tested on colors for preschool and kindergarten.  Making it fun will keep their interest and help them learn faster.

Preschoolers should know their basic colors before starting kindergarten.  It is taught in preschool but you can help your child learn at home.  Make learning time fun so your preschooler will be more receptive to learning and learning colors can be part of your daily play.

  • Preschoolers have very short attention spans, so practice teaching colors when your child is alert and receptive to learning.  Let your child determine how long the learning session should last.  Children that are bored will not pay attention and they will not be learning.

  • Young children need repeated exposure to new things to learn.  Practice learning colors every day so your child is able to understand and store the information.

  • Read books that teach colors.  Some books teach a new color for every page while others are devoted to a single color.  Talk about different objects in the book that are the same colors.  Point to each object and ask your child what color it is.

  • Paint and use crayons to learn about colors.  Ask what colors your child is using and help him learn the names.

  • Designate a color of the day or the week.  Wear clothes in that color, eat foods that color and play with toys that color.  Talk about the color throughout the day and let them help pick the foods or clothes that are that color.

  • Have a treasure hunt in your home looking for objects of a single color.  Go from room to room letting the child point out objects to you.  If he can't find any more, give hints to help him find more.
