How to Teach Tax Preparation
Teaching others how to prepare taxes can be difficult, even for top experts in the field. Learning how to present this knowledge to those that need it is essential. If you have tax knowledge and good communication skills, you can teach tax preparation to others who are eager to acquire this knowledge.
- Get your students to become familiar with the basic income tax formula. Encourage your students to memorize the major components of the income tax formula. Teach this formula in a step by step, easy to understand format so that your students will follow along and understand how this information is used on the 1040.
- Go over the tax formula and its major components. Present the major aspects of the tax formula to your students, one section at a time. Teach them about the different types of income and which of those are taxable.
- Concentrate on specialized topics. Emphasize specialized issues, such as military personnel and self-employment. Talk about these topics in detail. Also, cover retirement income separately and thoroughly.
- Get your students to start preparing tax returns on paper. Have the students practise what they're learning, that is, to prepare tax returns on paper. That way, they will get an understanding of the concept taught. Let them start with simple returns and later tackle more complex topics like self-employment.
- Teach your students how to use computer programs. Introduce them to some of the computer programs designed for tax preparation. Make sure they understand how to do electronic filing and the rules regarding electronic filing and payments. Also, teach them about signatures and record-keeping. Encourage them to go to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website and visit the Enrolled Agent section to learn more.
