How to Teach Water Safety to Kids

Water safety is an important lesson to teach kids of all ages. Whether the kids are in the bath, the lake, or a pool, they will need to know how to stay safe and keep others safe using the proper techniques. Each kid learns differently and when it comes to water safety there are many options available in ways to teach kids about water safety.

Ways to teach children about water safety can include one or many techniques. A few ways are:

  • Use of poster board. Draw graphs and illustrations on the poster board to promote water safety to kids. Listing rules and regulations is another way to demonstrate water safety. Use words the kids can easily understand. Write in large letters to improve the kids' chances of reading it. Also, consider writing with bright, colorful markers that will attract the kids attentions.

  • Use of books. Visit your local library or bookstore and pick up books on water safety. Use books that are age appropriate to the kids and help them read or read the books to them. Ask the kids questions throughout the reading process to ensure they comprehend what is being taught to them.

  • Use of songs. Look up water safety songs online or make-up your own. List out water safety rules in an upbeat tone with a sing-song voice. Sing the songs to the kids often, especially if the kids will be around water that day.

  • Water Safety Lessons. Find water safety lessons in your area and sign the kids up. Look for lessons that are age appropriate and teach the areas of water safety you find most important. Attend the class with the kids and when each class is finished, ask the kids questions concerning what they were taught. To refresh the kid's minds, take a water safety lesson every six months or sooner if you feel the kids need more instruction on water safety. Try different water safety classes until you find one or a few you enjoy.

  • Firsthand experience. Teach the kids about water safety by showing them the proper water techniques and letting them try out the techniques themselves. You can work on water safety in the pool, lake, or bath. Make sure the kids are always supervised.
