How to Teach an Apprentice Carpenter
The course of study provided in a carpentry apprentice program should give pupils indispensable methods, practices and techniques needed to become a carpenter. The assignment of a good carpentry teacher is to prepare apprentices with the ability and know-how to become a good carpenter.
People who are carpenters love to work with their hands, and are generally very good at what they do. A carpenter can be assigned to build anything and everything from boats to homes, as long as the material consists of wood. There are many opportunities for new carpenters to make their mark in the world. We just need good teachers to teach them. Teachers should make sure students learn the following:
- Teach the basics in math, algebra, geometry and trigonometry. When a person is working on constructing something, every measurement has to be sound and correct.
- Teach how apprentices should apply fundamental concepts for reading drawings, especially in the field of construction. A carpenter should know how to read blueprints. This is great for those who wish to have their own business.
- Teach the apprentice how to name and differentiate many types of wood and their properties and characteristics. Telling the difference between two types of wood will get a carpenter a job faster, not to mention it's simply critical for any carpentry job to know what wood you are working with.
- Teach and explain methods for doing framing tasks and other basic carpentry jobs.
- Do an in-depth teaching on the building of roofs and stairs. Many carpentry jobs involve renovating buildings. Unless this particular building has a unique conception, every building usually has a roof and a set of stairs.
- Teach students how to select wood for millwork, and how to specify moldings and different types of joints for cabinet work.
- Examine and review the basic concepts of the National Building Code.
- Guide the carpenter as he works with you on carpentry jobsites. Hands-on training is perhaps the most important aspect of teaching an apprentice carpenter.
