How to Tell Male Kittens From Female Kittens

Telling a male kitten from a female kitten may be difficult if you are not used to the species. Many mistakes have been made when trying to distinguish between the two. With a lot of research and observing different kittens genitals, you will be able to tell the difference.

  • Observe the genital areas of your kitten. You will have to do this by carefully lifting up the kittens tail to get a better view of the area. All kittens are born with two holes that are located under the tail. One hole is the anus and the other hole is the genital.

  • Look at the space between the anus and the genital. The space is usually longer between the anus and the penis on male kittens. Since there are no testicles on female kittens the area is shorter.

  • Check the shape on the kitten you should see a vertical cut on a female kitten. If the kitten is male you will notice a small circular opening for the penis. You will notice under the tail will resemble a semi-colon or a colon. On female kittens the area looks like a semi-colon and on a male kitten the area will resemble a colon.

  • Feel to see if your kitten has small round pea feeling objects between the anus the genital. If you feel small nodules your kitten is most likely a male kitten. These are the testicles and they usually show up about 4 to 6 weeks in age.
