How to Tell Whether 17-Inch Tires Will Fit On Rims
If you are purchasing new tires for your vehicle, it is important to know which size is the right size for your rims. You cannot put seventeen-inch tires on a smaller rim. The size of the rim must be the same as the size of the tire in order for them to be properly be installed on your vehicle.
- Measure the size of the rims on your car to determine the size tire that you need to fit on your vehicle. Measure the diameter of the rim from the flange on either side of the tire. The flange is the area where the reading of your tire connects with the tire on your rim.
- Round this number to the nearest whole-inch. Measurements can sometimes be slightly off. If you are measuring 17 1/4" for example, you will be able to fit 17-inch tires on your vehicle. If your rims measure smaller than that, you will need a smaller tire to fit on your existing rims.
- Check your owner’s manual if you are unsure what size tires you need. If you have not changed the rims on your vehicle, then the recommended size of tire in your owner’s manual is the size tires that you will need.
- Check the code on the tires that you want to install on your vehicle. There is a string of letters and numbers that represent the style for tire and recommended vehicle, as well as the size of the tire. The first letter in the string represents the type of vehicle that the tire is recommended for, and the second number indicates the inches of the inside diameter of the tire.
- Consult a tire shop if you are still unsure of the proper size tire that you need. Let them know that you would like to install 17-inch tires on your vehicle. They will be able to let you know if these tires will work for your specific vehicle and rims.
