How to Test Computer Components
Computer components are vital to the life of a computer. Computer parts can often be salvaged from a nonworking machine and reused in another. However, when doing this it is important to test them to ensure they are compatible and functional.
Supplies
- Screw driver
- Diagnostic CD
- Computer components
The best way to test each component is manually within a working system.
Here's how to do it:
- Install the component into a computer which is fully functional. Put the piece into the unit as if it is to be left in place in the computer. Tighten any of the required connections.
- It is not necessary to actually close the computer case since you will be removing the part after the test.
- Start with a hardware diagnostic test. In order to test hardware, install a diagnostic software to check the load on the components. Testing hardware with a diagnostic CD can take some time. It is usually run from the boot-up of the computer.
- Give the components a full workout by running them at maximum stress load.
- Use all the resources available on the computer for the tests. The more demands put on the parts, the more authentic the results will be. For example, if testing a video card, run a graphic intensive program such as a movie or complex video game. For a sound card, try running several programs at once which require sound.
After each test you will have a clearer idea of the component's ability to perform.
Remember, if the part can preform under extreme stress conditions, it should work adequately under normal operating conditions
