How to Test Cooking Appliances
You can easily test your cooking equipment at home regardless if it is gas or electric. The stovetop is the most important area to test because it is normally what causes the most fires according to the National Fire Protection Association. Therefore, it is paramount that you make sure that your appliances are in good working condition via testing.
- Make sure you have no gas leaks if
you have a gas range. Take a spray bottle and fill with water and
liquid soap. You want a 50/50 mix. Do not shake the spray bottle
rigorously or you will end up making it too sudsy. Gently mix. - Locate the gas line pipe on your
stove. This is where the actual stove is connected to the gas pipe.
You may need to pull the stove out a bit to be able to see the gas
pipe. Spray the solution on the pipe; you should see no bubbling
action. If you do see bubbles, it can indicate you have a leak in
the pipe and you should call the gas company immediately to come and
fix it. - Make a cake in your oven. Allow
the oven to pre-heat to exactly what the cake box calls for and then
place the cake in the oven. Use the kitchen timer and set it to the
exact minutes that the box indicates it should bake for. If the cake
bakes thoroughly in the allotted time, your oven is working
correctly. - Boil water on the stovetop. Try
all burners for electric and make sure that gas burners all light
when you turn the knob to “on.” Check all electrical cords to
all your major appliances including your refrigerator, stove, and
dishwasher. Any fraying cords need to be replaced as they are fire
hazards.
